The Host The Host by Stephenie Meyer

rating: 4 of 5 stars

this book took me entirely too long to read but... I LIKED IT! I REALLY LIKED IT!!  whew... i think my "book block" is finally over.

the host is stephenie meyer through and through. from the emotional characters to all the inner dialogue, the vivid imagery to the moral and ethical struggles... i could imagine what the scenery looked like as wanderer drove through the desert, i could imagine the meaning in the glances from one character to another, and hear the sighs as the characters struggled between the right thing to do and what made sense to keep them safe from the outside world.

meyer takes an idea and makes it very real without using too many words to explain or convince you of its reality. simplicity. i think that's what makes it appealing. and now that i've read something she wrote outside of the twilight series, i know it wasn't a fluke and she really is an idealist who knows how to write an interesting read. i still believe she's no savant, she's not going to make any "best writers of all time" lists anytime soon, but i'm excited to see what she does in the future and where she goes as an author.

good job, stephenie meyer, you've allowed me to enjoy vampires and aliens, both of which i'd never imagined giving two craps about.

now hurry up and write something else already.
